3 monkeys
Sex work and fetish are long-standing taboos that are often depicted in media as a seedy underbelly of society. While kink and fetish are slowly becoming normalised through iconic visualisations in mainstream pop culture, the message is clear:
Don’t look at it, don’t listen to it, and don’t talk about it.
The Japanese proverb of the three monkeys - Mizaru, Kikazaru, and Iwazaru who see, hear, and speak no evil - is perceived in two ways: 1) Proper conduct; and 2) Willful ignorance. In an attempt to envision the inner conflict within us all, I seek to juxtapose the frank imagery of folks who identify with and participate in the kink, sex, and fetish scenes with the symbolism of the 3 Monkeys, while opposing the societal conception of what it means to be polite society.
